My work in this standard focuses on implementing my carefully planned
lessons and helping students to connect with the content. I am very knowledgeable about my content area. My lessons demonstrate
this knowledge and my eagerness to share this knowledge with my students. I try to fit the content within the framework of
the students' knowledge, interests, abilities, cultural backgrounds, and personal backgrounds. At the same time, I help students
to move beyond the limits of their current knowledge or understanding. While teaching, I make certain that students assimilate
information accurately. My assessments typically ask them to demonstrate that they understand and can apply what they have
learned.

Literary Theory Jigsaw Activity
The literary theory jigsaw activity I designed for the Advanced Placement Literature
and Composition course demonstrates that I understand the content of my subject area, how knowledge in this field is
created, organized, and linked to other disciplines.
I provided groups of students with information about five literary theories:
Feminist, Marxist, Psychoanalytical, New Historicism, and New Criticism. In expert groups, the students determined what
they needed to teach to their jigsaw groups. During the next class, the students taught each other the theories and
took notes on a chart I provided.

Blog Activity
The web log (Blog) I use with my Advanced Placement Literature and Composition demonstrates
that I use multiple paths to knowledge.
This blog assignment, completed every week, asks students to respond to questions
posed by myself or their fellow classmates. In their responses the students reference texts we've read or what
we've discussed in class. Although the students may choose to respond only to the question, I also ask them to respond
to their classmates' posts.
